Working to make government more effective

Governance and funding

The Institute is a non-partisan charity. We are transparent about our governance and funding.

The Institute is a not for profit organisation, a registered charity (No: 1123926) and a company limited by guarantee (No: 6480524).

Governance

The Institute employs about 50 staff based at its office in Westminster. Responsibility for management of the Institute rests with the director, who works with the senior management team to drive the quality of our research and recommendations and ensure that we operate effectively and efficiently in making an impact with our work.

The director reports to the Board and works under the Board’s strategic direction. The Board is responsible for the corporate governance of the Institute, ensuring that it complies with all legal and regulatory requirements and guidance and applies its resources to pursuing its charitable objectives. The Board is also responsible for ensuring that the Institute management has in place adequate risk monitoring and management measures, particularly in relation to finance and cyber-security.

Funding

The Institute receives core funding from one major funder: the Gatsby Foundation. The Gatsby Foundation was set up by Lord Sainsbury to realise his charitable objectives. The Institute seeks to supplement this by working with a range of charitable, corporate, academic and other partners who support our aims.  The Institute is open and transparent about its funding and publishes a list of all funders.
