Autumn Statement: Osborne targets £15bn Whitehall savings

Whitehall departments will have to find billions more in efficiency savings in the next parliament, George Osborne said on Wednesday, as he confirmed plans to inject a further £2bn into the NHS each year from 2015.

Julian McCrae, deputy director of the Institute for Government, said the £10bn in savings targeted by the chancellor could only be achieved if there was “real and fundamental change in the way the government operates”.

Whitehall needed to provide the “clear and personal leadership needed to make these savings happen”, he added.
