Whitehall fails to release details of top civil servants’ performance

Permanent secretaries' objectives have been published late, the FT reports, lacking detail and accountability, according to the IfG.

Deputy Director of the Institute for Government, Julian McCrae, has highlighted the inherent vagueness and lack of accountability in published objectives for permanent secretaries. He told the FT: “Permanent secretaries’ objectives notionally form the basis for their performance management. However, they are currently of relatively little value in clarifying what is expected”.

Julian McCrae has also written a blog 'Clarity of accountability - are permanent secretary objectives helping?', based on analysis from our latest Whitehall Monitor bulletin.
