IfG statement: Now time for Boris Johnson to deliver

Now that Boris Johnson has a 78-seat majority it is time for the prime minister to deliver on his promises.

He will get his Brexit deal through Parliament – he should then take enough time to negotiate an ambitious future relationship, if necessary calling for an extension to the transition period. The Conservative manifesto provides no clear mandate on economic policy and how to deliver world-class public services whilst also pursuing tax cuts.

His biggest challenge, however, may be to uphold his promise to protect the Union.
