The Institute for Government was delighted to welcome Peter Riddell, author of Fifteen Minutes of Power: The Uncertain Life of British Ministers, for a panel discussion to discuss key themes from the book including how they get appointed, reshuffled and perhaps sacked, how they manage the day-to-day workload and navigate crises, and how we might improve effectiveness.
Panellists included:
- Rt Hon Jacqui Smith, former Minister of State for Health (2001–03), Industry and the Regions (2003–05) and Schools and Learning (2005–06) and former Home Secretary (2007–09)
- Rt Hon Lord Willetts, former Minister of State, Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (2010–14)
- Baroness (Susan) Kramer, former Minister of State for Transport (2013–15)
- Sir Bernard Jenkin MP, Chair of the House of Commons Public Administration and Constitutional Affairs Select Committee.
The discussion was chaired by Dr Catherine Haddon, Senior Fellow at the Institute for Government.
