The Institute for Government is delighted to welcome Dame Fiona Reynolds, Chair of the National Audit Office (NAO), who will be ‘in conversation’ with our Acting Director Dr Hannah White.

The NAO’s recent priorities – as the UK’s independent public spending watchdog – have included reviews into the government’s pledge to build 40 new hospitals by 2030, reports on the government’s preparedness for the Covid pandemic, and assessment of the state of the government’s £158bn property portfolio. Dame Fiona will discuss how the NAO assesses the value for money of government spending, the impact the NAO can have, and its priorities for the rest of the year.

This event will be available to watch live or in-person to anyone who would like to register. Questions can be submitted remotely during the event.

Fiona Reynolds begun her tenure as chair of the NAO in January 2021. She was Master of Emmanuel College, Cambridge from 201221, Director-General of the National Trust from 200112, and director of the Council for the Protection of Rural England (now Campaign to Protect Rural England) from 198798. She has also worked in government as director of the Women’s Unit in the Cabinet Office (19982000).

The National Audit Office is responsible for auditing central government departments, government agencies and non-departmental public bodies.
