POSTPONED: Influencing the EU: lessons from Canada, Switzerland and beyond

This event will explore what the UK can learn from Canada, Switzerland and other third countries.

Please note: This event has been postponed. We will reschedule as soon as possible – please check the website for updates.  Please DO NOT travel to the Institute for Government this event.

Brexit does not mean the end of the UK’s partnership with the EU. The two sides will still need to address shared problems, from climate change to terrorism, and build a positive economic relationship.

The UK will want to continue trying to influence some EU rules that matter to it – but will find it harder now that it is no longer in the EU room.

This event will explore what the UK can learn from Canada, Switzerland and other third countries.

Our panel includes:

  • Andrew MacDougall, Director, Trafalgar Strategy; former adviser to Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper, 2008–13
  • Ambassador Alexis Lautenberg, former Swiss Ambassador to the EU, Italy and the UK
  • Sir Ivan Rogers KCMG, UK Permanent Representative to the EU, 2013–17
  • Georgina Wright, Senior Researcher, Institute for Government

The event will be chaired by Jill Rutter, Senior Fellow at the Institute for Government.
