The Institute for Government was delighted to welcome Shadow Justice Secretary David Lammy.

Having been commissioned by former prime minister David Cameron to lead an independent review into the treatment of ethnic minorities in the criminal justice system, David Lammy published his findings in 2017. He has since criticised the government for failing to implement his recommendations and questioned the purpose of Boris Johnson’s new review into racial inequality.

Appointed as shadow justice secretary in April, David Lammy has spoken out on the “need to update terrorism sentencing legislation” and has welcomed the decision to reverse the privatisation of probation service. He has also been outspoken about the government’s handling of the deportation of the Windrush generation and has repeatedly criticised the Grenfell Tower inquiry. A former minister under both Tony Blair and Gordon Brown, he was one of the leading campaigners to keep the UK in the EU.

He was in conversation with Bronwen Maddox, Director of the Institute for Government.

David Lammy has been the Member of Parliament for Tottenham since 2000. He has previously been Minister of Culture and Minister of State for Innovation, Universities and Skills. In April 2020, Sir Keir Starmer appointed him to serve in the Shadow Cabinet as Secretary of State for Justice and Shadow Lord Chancellor.
